ChatGPT Business costs US$20 a seat a month billed annually. Plus vs Business vs Enterprise for Australian firms: AUD, GST, data residency, who buys which.

ChatGPT Business costs US$20 per user per month billed annually, or US$25 month to month, for workspaces of 2 to 200 users, with a Premium seat at US$100 or US$125 for heavy users. For most Australian teams that don’t run their day inside Outlook and Teams, ChatGPT Business is the plan to buy. Plus is a personal plan and shouldn’t hold company data, and Enterprise only earns its place once you need Australian data storage, SCIM provisioning or invoiced billing.

TL;DR: Buy ChatGPT Business Standard seats for everyone, add a handful of Premium seats for the people who live in it, and pilot on monthly billing before you commit to an annual term. OpenAI prices in US dollars, so check the AUD figure at checkout and enter your ABN before the first invoice. If client data must be stored in Australia, Business can’t promise that today and Enterprise can.

What ChatGPT Business costs in Australia

Prices checked on 7 November 2026 against OpenAI’s business pricing page and its billing and seats help article. OpenAI publishes US dollar prices only and its Business FAQ says they “may vary by country and currency”, so the AUD column below is our own conversion at the RBA rate of A$1 = US$0.6900 on 6 November 2026. It is illustrative, not a list price.

EnterpriseCustom, annual, through salesNot publishedLarger firms with residency, SCIM or invoicing needs

The annual Standard price dropped from US$25 to US$20 on 2 April 2026, which is why older posts still quote US$25. If you are searching for ChatGPT Team, it is the same product: OpenAI renamed Team to Business on 29 August 2025 and the rename itself changed neither features nor pricing.

A worked example, illustrative only: a 10-person firm with eight Standard and two Premium seats on annual billing pays US$4,320 a year, about A$6,260 at that rate. Ten Standard seats on the same annual plan would cost US$2,400, so those two Premium seats account for US$1,920 of the bill. Hand them out on evidence of heavy use, not seniority.

AUD billing, GST and the ABN field

OpenAI’s multi-currency billing article lists AUD among the currencies for plans bought on chatgpt.com, and says localised prices may differ from a straight conversion of the US price. Screenshot the checkout figure before you pay.

GST is where Australian buyers trip up. The ATO applies GST to imported digital services sold to Australian consumers, and a GST-registered business is not a consumer for that purpose. OpenAI’s help centre says a buyer in a region that levies VAT can self-identify as a business and enter a Tax ID at checkout, which exempts the purchase. Updating the Tax ID later only changes future invoices, so enter your ABN in Workspace settings > Billing on day one. If part of your business makes input-taxed supplies, as many financial services firms do, the ATO’s reverse charge rules may apply. That one is for your accountant.

Two billing details matter more than the headline price. In Australia, self-serve Business is paid by credit or debit card: OpenAI offers no invoices, purchase orders or net terms on the self-serve plan. And while added seats are charged immediately on a prorated basis, reductions only take effect at the next renewal. On an annual plan, every seat you add stays committed until the term ends.

ChatGPT Business vs Plus: the cheap option isn’t cheaper

On annual billing a Business Standard seat and a Plus subscription cost the same US$20. The difference is who owns the data. OpenAI’s consumer pricing page says content on Plus is used to train its models unless the user opts out, while Business content is not used for training by default. Business also adds SAML SSO, MFA, domain verification and an admin console, and when someone leaves, you reassign their seat and the workspace stays with the company. With Plus on a personal card, their chat history leaves with them.

The most common thing we see go wrong is a business where half the staff already pay for Plus themselves and paste client material into it. The OAIC’s guidance on commercially available AI products recommends, as best practice, that organisations not enter personal information, and particularly sensitive information, into publicly available generative AI tools. Moving those people onto Business costs the same US$20 a seat annually and keeps their work out of model training, though it still isn’t a licence to paste in health records. Pair it with a written AI policy, because the shadow AI problem doesn’t fix itself.

What Enterprise adds, and the Australian data question

Business covers most of what a 20-person firm needs. Connectors for Google Workspace, Slack, GitHub and Microsoft 365, company knowledge, workspace agents and the Excel, Word and PowerPoint extensions are included. What it lacks shows up in OpenAI’s own comparison table: no SCIM, no role-based access controls, no Compliance API, no IP allowlisting, no enterprise key management, and no ISO 27001-family certifications.

Data location is the bigger gap for Australian firms. Since OpenAI’s 25 November 2025 expansion, new ChatGPT Enterprise workspaces can have customer content stored at rest in Australia. Inference is a different matter: OpenAI’s residency article lists in-region processing only for Europe, the United States and the UAE, so prompts are still processed offshore. For Business, the pricing table marks data residency as unavailable, and OpenAI’s help centre says Business residency is “rolling out gradually”, with a copy of every prompt and response kept in the US for a limited time for abuse monitoring, whichever region you pick.

None of that rules ChatGPT out. Sending personal information offshore can engage APP 8 of the Privacy Act, which you manage through the vendor’s terms and an honest overseas-disclosure line in your privacy policy. And if you use ChatGPT to make or inform decisions that significantly affect people, from 10 December 2026 your privacy policy must say so. If a client contract says data must stay in Australia, though, don’t rely on Business today. Before you sign either plan, run through our AI vendor checklist.

When Claude or Microsoft 365 Copilot fits better

The deciding factor is usually your software stack rather than the model, as our three-way comparison of Copilot, Gemini and ChatGPT argues. On price, Claude’s Team plan matches ChatGPT Business exactly: US$20 or US$25 for a Standard seat, US$100 or US$125 for Premium, for teams of 2 to 150. Microsoft publishes Australian prices: Microsoft 365 Copilot Business lists at AU$31.40 per user per month paid yearly, or AU$37.68 monthly, ex GST, as an add-on to an eligible Microsoft 365 business plan. Until 31 December 2026 the yearly price is discounted to AU$26.91 for the first year.

Our view, from more than 15 years of running technology programs for organisations from Telstra to NSW Government, is that tool choice matters less than rollout. Buy seats for a defined group and measure what they do with them.

How we’d buy ChatGPT Business

Start on monthly billing with five to ten people who have named tasks, such as proposal drafting, meeting notes or reconciling spreadsheets. Run it for six to eight weeks, then check the admin console’s usage analytics. Move to annual once you know the seat count, because annual saves 20% on Standard seats but locks every seat in for the term. Upgrade individuals to Premium only when they keep hitting limits; OpenAI has flagged that from December, Business usage will share one allowance across ChatGPT and Codex, so heavy Codex users should watch their limits.

Turn on SSO, verify your domain, enter your ABN and decide which connectors staff may use before anyone logs in. Our AI tools setup service covers all of it.

The verdict on ChatGPT Business

For an Australian business with somewhere between 2 and 200 staff and no hard requirement to keep data onshore, ChatGPT Business is the right ChatGPT plan, and on annual billing it costs no more than the Plus subscriptions your team may already be expensing. Enterprise is for firms whose contracts or security teams demand Australian storage, SCIM and invoices. If your business runs on Microsoft 365, price Copilot first.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does ChatGPT Business cost in Australia?

OpenAI lists ChatGPT Business at US$20 per user per month billed annually or US$25 monthly, and Premium seats at US$100 or US$125. AUD is offered at checkout and may not match a straight conversion. At the RBA rate on 6 November 2026, a Standard annual seat works out to about A$29 a month, as an illustration only.

Is ChatGPT Team the same as ChatGPT Business?

Yes. OpenAI renamed ChatGPT Team to ChatGPT Business on 29 August 2025. Existing Team workspaces simply became Business workspaces.

Does ChatGPT Business train on my company’s data?

No, not by default. OpenAI states that content in Business and Enterprise workspaces is not used to train its models. Plus, Go and Free accounts are used for training unless the user opts out, which is the main reason staff shouldn’t use personal accounts for client work.

Can ChatGPT store our data in Australia?

ChatGPT Enterprise can store customer content at rest in Australia for new workspaces, although OpenAI doesn’t offer in-region model processing in Australia, so prompts are still processed offshore. Business residency is still rolling out, and OpenAI’s comparison table doesn’t offer it on Business yet.

What is the minimum number of seats for ChatGPT Business?

Usually two paid seats, in any mix of Standard and Premium, and OpenAI says some new workspaces can start with one. For workspaces created since 24 August 2026, a Business subscription is capped at 200 seats; above that, OpenAI points you to Enterprise.
